![]() The music on which the cakewalk was performed was called the ragtime : it came from African rythms, and was the ancestor of jazz music. It is only later that black people performed to entertain the white people. The cakewalk was performed by white men during the minstrels shows (comic shows), exclusively by men at first. When the whites used to dance the Minuet, the black people imitated them, inventing the cakewalk. ![]() The show was very succesful over the country. ![]() The name comes from the song « Jump Jim Crow » in 1828 : Thomas Darmouth Rice was a white man performing a show, disguised and imitating in black man. This segregation was made legal through the Jim Crow laws. In 1865, the civil war broke out in America : the slaves were free.Īlthough slavery was banned from the country, there was a segregation between white and black people in the Southern states of the USA. Every spiritual song were about them and their condition ( here is one of the most powerful spiritual, talking subliminally about evasion). This is what is considered the first « black genre of music ». Slaves have been thought « the spirituals ». Work songs : these songs helped the slaves synchronize during group tasks and « eased » the burden of hard labour.Fun was not an option for the slaves, yet recreational songs may have been the closest to any feelings of joy (1). Recreational songs ( Example here) : Recreational songs not only raised the livelihood and morale of the slaves, but were also used to divert and distract attention away from the misery, distress and fatigue that slaves felt on a daily basis.Religious songs ( Example here) : Religious were usually sung acapella and accompanied by handclapping and foot stamping.We can indeed split slavery music in three main categories : But they express high and loud their humanity when singing the « work songs » ( exemple of work song). In the eyes of their owners, the slaves were only animals. Black music is a powerful term, as it was born in the America of slavery. What does Wikipedia say? The website defines black music as « a term encompassing music produced or inspired by black people, including Sub-Saharan African music traditions and African popular music as well as the music genres of African American music which arose in times of slavery that characterized the lives of black Americans prior to the American Civil War. » For some of them, black music equals Hip-Hop, which is the most narrow definition you can give it. Nowadays, a lot of people use the expression « black music » in their own way.
